Description
The Department of Medicine and the Division of Neurology at the University of Ottawa and the Ottawa Hospital is recruiting an academic neurologist with fellowship training in stroke to join the Division of Neurology.
The successful applicant will join a nationally leading neurovascular team (www.ottawastrokeprogram.ca) to develop and lead an independent research program. The team seeks a clinician researcher who can bring research expertise in clinical trials and acute stroke therapy. Our group has existing studies and future opportunities in CT perfusion and endovascular thrombectomy that we wish to expand. The successful candidate is expected to obtain peer reviewed funding, publish, and train graduate students.
The individual will rotate on the Neurovascular Unit which involves subacute stroke unit care as well as teaching of fellows, residents and medical students. The individual will be expected to participate in: 1) outpatient stroke care through the Stroke Prevention Clinic, 2) rotate on the Neurovascular Unit, 3), Participate in Ottawa Stroke Program research trials and academic activities, 4) teach medical students, residents and fellows in outpatient and inpatient settings, 5) participate in the Neurology on-call rotation on a regular basis. This position works under the general direction of the Head of the Division of Neurology, Department of Medicine at the Ottawa Hospital/University of Ottawa.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will be a neurologist with a minimum of two years of fellowship training in stroke neurology, with a strong track record of research productivity; have experience in outpatient stroke patient management as well as acute care including the management of patients receiving thrombolysis and endovascular treatment; and, be eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of an Assistant Professor or higher at the University of Ottawa within the Department of Medicine. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
In addition, the successful applicant must be licensed to practice medicine in Ontario; have, or be eligible for, certification in Neurology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and be a member of or be eligible for membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association. A minimum 2 year clinical and academic fellowship in stroke neurology is required. A graduate degree in Epidemiology or related clinical research field is required as well as demonstrated potential to obtain external peer-review grant funding and external salary awards. Experience teaching medical students and residents is required.
The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.

The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including but not limited to clinical billings (fee-for-service), salary support (AFP) as well as honorariums/stipends. Health and welfare benefits including extended health, dental and disability insurance as well as life insurance are offered to full-time physicians.
The Ottawa Hospital sees approximately 1000 stroke codes per year. It is supported by a leading interventional neuroradiology service. Close ties are also maintained with neurosurgery and vascular surgery. The Neurovascular Unit is responsible for the care of up to 15 complex neurovascular patients through hyperacute care and subacute stroke management. This service is supported by neurology residents and exposes regular rotating residents in disciplines such as emergency medicine to stroke care.
Outpatient services are conducted through the Stroke Prevention Clinic which sees approximately 2000 patients per year. This clinic is supported by 3 nurses and 2 administrators with expediated access to neurovascular imaging and cardiac testing.
The Division of Neurology has 34 part time and full-time members with a focus in neuromuscular, MS, neuro ophthalmology, movement disorders, epilepsy and stroke. Members of the Division have a wide range of basic and clinical research skills including in epidemiology, ethics and trial design.
The Ottawa Hospital is a 1150 bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). There are approximately 50,000 inpatient admissions, 160,000 emergency visits and over one million outpatient visits annually.
The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) is TOH’s research arm. It ranks fourth out of more than 600 Canadian hospitals for competitive, peer-reviewed grants from the prestigious Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
