Cardiology
The Division of Cardiology is located geographically at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) including the General and Riverside Campuses. The Division provides tertiary care cardiology service for Ottawa and the Champlain Health District with a referral population of greater than 1.5 million people. The Division is the largest within the Department of Medicine. Our division includes not only cardiologists but also lipid, hypertension, and cardiac rehabilitation specialists and PhD scientists. Members have been recognized locally, nationally and internationally for excellence and innovations in clinical care, teaching and scholarship in education as well as basic/translational science and clinical research.

Critical Care
The Division of Critical Care Medicine at the Department of Medicine, University of Ottawa is unique in that it is in fact an Interdepartmental Division, and thus has members from the Departments of Medicine, Surgery and Anesthesiology. This multi-specialty makeup enables the Division to provide the broadest scope of expertise in the management of critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Units (ICU) at the Civic and General Campuses of The Ottawa Hospital.

Dermatology
Dermatology holds a unique position within the Department of Medicine. Our specialty encompasses both medical and surgical care and expertise. The majority of our work is performed at the Ottawa Hospital, but we also function within the Elizabeth Bruyere Health Centre and the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. A number of our members perform clinics elsewhere within the Champlain LHIN and beyond.

Endocrinology & Metabolism
The Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism is based at the Riverside campus of The Ottawa Hospital. Our 4th floor location was completely renovated in 2004, and now encompasses administrative offices, conference/teaching rooms, a spacious ambulatory clinic area, and a contiguous clinical research centre that includes its own clinical assessment rooms, a wet bench clinical research laboratory, as well as a dynamic endocrine testing laboratory. Our basic, translational, and clinical research activities are linked to the Chronic Disease Program of the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI), and include studies addressing adipose tissue dysfunction, lipoprotein metabolism, gestational diabetes, autoimmunity in type 1 diabetes, and innovative models of quality and safety for diabetes care.
Our ambulatory clinic area is organized as the Foustanellas Endocrine and Diabetes Centre, and is the leading referral centre in Eastern Ontario for complex clinical care, research, and professional education. We serve a population of just over a million people, providing specialized bilingual, inpatient and outpatient care to patients and families with a variety of endocrine and metabolic conditions including diabetes, lipid disorders, thyroid cancer, osteoporosis, and disorders of the thyroid, the parathyroid, the pituitary, and the adrenal glands.

Gastroenterology
The Division of Gastroenterology at The Ottawa Hospital is an experienced group of Academic clinicians with special interests in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Colon Cancer, Liver Disease/Liver Failure, and Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy. We provide tertiary care and clinical expertise to a large population of patients with all types of acute and chronic gastrointestinal disorders. We have recently recruited several young gastroenterologists who have obtained advanced trained at highly respected centres in both IBD and Endoscopic Ultrasound.

General Internal Medicine
The Academic Division of Internal Medicine at the Ottawa Hospital consists of 26 full and part time academic Internal medicine specialists. These internists have a very active role in both the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital, providing patient care for up to 200 patients daily. One of the strengths of GIM in this Department of Medicine is the fact that core membership is comprised of General Internists. This provides a high and consistent level of patient care and housestaff learning on our clinical units.

Geriatric Medicine
Geriatric Medicine is a branch of Internal Medicine that focuses on health promotion and the prevention and treatment of disease and disability in later life. Our mission is to provide each older adult and their families with the world-class care, exceptional service and compassion that we would want for our loved ones.
The Division of Geriatric Medicine and the Regional Geriatric Program of Eastern Ontario (RGPEO) are based at the Civic Campus of The Ottawa Hospital. A well-coordinated and comprehensive range of specialized Geriatric services is provided throughout the region. The Division is considered a leader in medical education targeted at the Undergraduate, Postgraduate and CME levels with a particular focus on assessment tools for Dementia and Delirium. This expertise is also linked to clinical research activities focused on the assessment of Driving in the Older Person and Dementia Care.

The Ottawa Blood Disease Centre (OBDC) is a world-class facility devoted to improving care for patients with blood disease. As part of the Ottawa Hospital, the Centre provides care for more than thirty thousand Ottawa-area patients with blood disorders and blood cancers, or who require blood or bone marrow transplants.

Infectious Diseases
The Division of Infectious Diseases at the Ottawa Hospital/University of Ottawa is a highly academic division committed to quality patient care which is the foundation of clinical and basic science research and which leads to quality improvement in our patient care. The division is involved in the education of medical students at all levels, Masters and PhD candidates, interns and residents and Infectious Disease fellows. The division has a mandate to provide regional infectious disease consultation as well as regional infection control advice to the entire Champlain region of Eastern Ontario and West Quebec.

Medical Oncology
The Division of Medical Oncology is a member of the Department of Medicine at The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine. The Division provides all medical oncology services to Eastern Ontario with a population of over 1.2 million.
There are currently 22 medical oncologists supported by allied health professionals in tumour-site-specific teams. The Division has a leading role in conducting local, national and international clinical trials in association with the Ottawa Health Research Institute, and is a major contributor to the research programs of the NCIC Clinical Trials Group. The Division also fulfills its academic role through undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activities.

Nephrology
The Division of Nephrology at the Ottawa Department of Medicine strives to provide world class clinical care to residents of Ottawa & Eastern Ontario who suffer from kidney diseases. Our division offers a full complement of specialty ambulatory clinics at the Jindal Kidney Care Centre: General Nephrology Hypertension, Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease, and Progressive Renal Insufficiency. These clinics are lead by physicians with world class expertise. Inpatients are admitted to the clinical teaching unit, where a strong multidisciplinary care plan has been developed. The Division of Nephrology also maintains its independent expertise in critical care nephrology and, in close collaboration with the Intensivists, is solely responsible for providing renal replacement services, including SLED and CRRT, to all intensive care areas at The Ottawa Hospital and The University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

Neurology
The Division of Neurology at Ottawa’s Department of Medicine is pursuing a vision for growth by focusing on key areas of subspecialty interest: Stroke, Movement Disorders, Neuromuscular Disorders and Multiple Sclerosis. Each specialty area is rooted in a strong dedication and state-of-the-art expertise in the care of our patients, complemented by active multidisciplinary clinical research and closely linked to basic neuroscience research at the University level. The Division of Neurology has achieved considerable success in research productivity, publications, and grant funding – while keeping a clear focus on our duty to both patients and community. In the past few years, the Division of Neurology has been successful in recruiting several high tier clinician scientists and dedicated clinical teachers. This has also been an exciting time of expansion with the opening of the new Neuromuscular Centre.

The Division of Nuclear Medicine at The Ottawa Hospital is geographically located at all three campuses; General, Civic and Riverside. The Division, which is the largest in the region, provides a full range of Nuclear Medicine services to Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec with a catchment population of approximately 1.2 million people.

Palliative Care
Our Division, working alongside colleagues from other disciplines in interprofessional teams, has evolved into a dynamic and academically productive team providing clinical coverage across several settings in Ottawa and the Champlain region. These range from in-hospital and community-based consult teams to acute palliative care units and hospices. We value research in the domains of clinical care and education and believe that these are the engines that drive excellence and best practices in these areas.

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
The Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) is unique to the Department of Medicine. PM&R is a medical speciality concerned with the comprehensive diagnosis, medical management and rehabilitation of persons of all ages with neuromusculoskeletal disorders and associated disabilities. We are a patient-centred, team-based speciality that resides within the care versus the cure medical model – opposite end of the acute medical spectrum. Our work aims at improving our patients’ quality of life and fostering safe and independent living.
Our Physiatrists work in an interprofessional, interdisciplinary model of care to meet the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of patients. Our teams pride themselves on treating patients with dignity and respect in an environment that fosters health and wellness as well as the advancement of knowledge of effective and comprehensive physical rehabilitation practices.

Respirology
The Division of Respiratory Medicine (also known as the Division of Respirology, or the Division of Pulmonary Medicine) encompasses all of the major subspecialty interests in the field of respiratory medicine.
In recent years we have expanded our divisional faculty and we now have clinical professors with key clinical and research interests in all aspects of respiratory medicine, including interventional pulmonology, adult cystic fibrosis, tuberculosis, post lung transplant care, exercise physiology, pleural diseases, pulmonary hypertension, respiratory and ventilatory care of chronic neuromuscular diseases, and sleep medicine.
The Division of Respiratory Medicine has achieved continuing and increasing success in research productivity. Our expertise is in clinical research and clinical and population epidemiology. Our faculty publish widely in the best medical journals in the world, including NEJM, Lancet and JAMA.

Rheumatology
We provide exemplary care to patients with a wide variety of musculoskeletal and autoimmune diseases. We provide service to the Champlain LHIN and outreach care to patients in Baffin Island. We are focusing on the development of priority programs including Advanced Therapeutics and Systemic Autoimmune Rheumatic Diseases such as lupus, scleroderma and Sjogren’s syndrome. Considering that 1 in 6 Canadians are affected, we have significant manpower challenges. We are actively developing relationships with community physicians and agencies such as The Arthritis Society and The Osteoporosis Society. We are committed to the training of rotating students and residents from a variety of fields and are proud of our subspecialty training program. Advances in disease modifying and specifically targeted biologic therapies are contributing to the excitement in and for our subspecialty.
